How to conduct the tensile test on 304 stainless steel coils and determine their standard hardness?
1. The tensile test involves rolling 316L stainless steel into specimens, and then pulling the specimens to the point of fracture on a tensile testing machine. Subsequently, one or several mechanical properties are measured. Typically, only the tensile strength, yield strength, elongation after fracture, and reduction of area are determined. The tensile test is the most fundamental mechanical property testing method for metallic materials. Almost all metallic materials, as long as they have mechanical property requirements, are stipulated to undergo tensile tests. Especially for those materials whose shapes are not conducive to hardness testing, the tensile test becomes the sole means for mechanical property detection.

The hardness test involves slowly pressing a hard indenter onto the surface of the sample using a hardness tester under specified conditions, and then measuring the depth or size of the indentation. This is done to determine the hardness of the material. The hardness test is the simplest, fastest, and most easily implemented method among material mechanical property tests. The hardness test is non-destructive, and there is an approximate conversion relationship between the material hardness value and the tensile strength value. The hardness value of the material can be converted into the tensile strength value, which has great practical significance.
Because the tensile test is not convenient for testing and it is very easy to convert hardness to strength, people are increasingly only testing the hardness of materials and less testing their strength. Especially due to the continuous progress and innovation in hardness testing instrument manufacturing technology, some materials that were originally unable to be directly tested for hardness, such as 316L stainless steel coils, can now be directly tested for hardness. Therefore, there is a trend that hardness testing is gradually replacing the tensile test.
