The price of 316L stainless steel coils has skyrocketed, but is the demand real?

In the beginning of 2026, the 316L stainless steel coil market presented a complex picture of both supply-demand imbalance and high costs. On one hand, driven by the domestic market in China and supported by raw material costs, the export quotations for 316L stainless steel coils rose significantly by nearly 200 US dollars within a short period of time, with the mainstream quotations approaching 1930 US dollars per ton. On the other hand, the demand in major global consumer markets, except for South Asia, was generally weak. At the same time, with the successful trial production of an emerging stainless steel project in Indonesia, the supply pattern is gradually evolving from oligopoly to diversified competition. Under the double pressure of high costs and new production capacity, the future price center and competitive landscape have become the focus of market attention.
